Canyoning in Kyushu: Inside Fujikawachi Gorge

Fujikawachi Gorge, in the mountains of southern Oita, is to me the most beautiful waterside in Kyushu. Here is what a day of canyoning there is like.

One rock, a chain of pools

Imagine a valley where everything you can see is a single slab of rock. Over time, the water has carved a chain of round potholes into it, one linked to the next. Each pool glows in a gradient of bright, clear, pale blue.

In Honshu, gorges like this are usually hidden deep in the mountains, where only serious hikers can reach them. At Fujikawachi, you can step right into one with your guide.

Climb up, then jump and slide down

The tour comes in two halves. First, you head upstream, working together as a team to climb small waterfalls and boulders. Then you come back down the fun way, jumping into pools and riding natural rock slides.

You do not need any climbing skills. The guides choose the route and set up each section with safety first, so beginners can relax and enjoy it.

A hidden place, even in Japan

Fujikawachi is about four hours by car from Fukuoka, Kyushu's biggest city. That distance keeps the crowds away. Few tourists come, and it is little known even in Japan, yet it ranks among the finest gorges in the country.

The place also has a calm, almost mystical feel. The air is bright and full of good energy, and many people choose it as a place to meditate.

Your guides

The tour is run by OTTER. Hiro of OTTER is one of the pioneers who first developed waterside outdoor tours in Kyushu. He has a lot of experience abroad and is highly skilled at cycling, Canadian canoeing, river kayaking and climbing. In his free time, he paddles his kayak over waterfalls. He works alongside Jiro, a climber who has climbed all over the world. I will introduce them properly in a future post.

After the gorge

Just nearby is Fujikawachi Yutopia, a hot spring that the people of the local village take good care of. A soak there is a perfect way to end a day in the water.

Why I started Tengle Earth

I love this place so much that I wanted true outdoor lovers to know about it. Honestly, it is one of the reasons I started this business.
